Lake Mburo Safari in February – Best Time for Wildlife, Cycling & Boat Cruises

Lake Mburo Safari in February - Best Time for Wildlife, Cycling & Boat Cruises

Lake Mburo in February is dry, with warm temperatures during the day and cooler nights. The park receives very little rainfall during this month, which keeps the roads dry and easy to use. Lake Mburo is about 290 kilometers from Kampala when traveling by road.

February is a good month to see wildlife as many animals gather around the remaining water sources. The vegetation is sparse, making it easier to see animals. Game drives are best early in the morning or at night.

You will likely see groups of Burchell’s zebras, which are common in the park, as well as giraffes, antelopes, and impalas. Night game drives offer a chance to spot leopards and hyenas. Carry snacks and a camera to capture memories. Morning and evening hours are usually cool, so bring a light jacket.

February is a busy month in Lake Mburo, so it is important to book your trip early, at least two months in advance. Some of the accommodation options include Mihingo Lodge, Kigambira Safari Lodge, Mburo Eagle’s Nest, Kigarama Wilderness Lodge, Rwakobo Rock, and Leopard Rest Camp. Booking early gives you better options.

The park offers unique activities in February. One of them is cycling safaris, where visitors ride through the park and enjoy wide views. The weather is good, and the trails are dry and clear. Cyclists often pass by buffaloes, warthogs, and elands, especially on the route from Rwakobo Rock to Lake Mburo.

Nature walks are also popular in the dry season. These walks bring you close to wildlife, especially birds in Rubanga Forest. You can also enjoy views from the hills, including sights of the park’s nine lakes.

Walks are guided, and visitors are free to move in different parts of the park. They are best done in the morning when it is still cool. Pack a reusable water bottle, comfortable walking boots, binoculars for small or distant animals, insect repellent, and sun protection.

The calm water in February is good for boat cruises on Lake Mburo. During the boat ride, you may see crocodiles, hippos, African finfoots, shoebills, herons, and African fish eagles. A boat cruise usually takes about two hours and is best done in the late afternoon.

February is a great time to visit Lake Mburo. Most activities can be done easily, but expect more visitors than usual, though not as many as in Queen Elizabeth or Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
