Leopards in Lake Mburo - Night Game Drives & Safari Tips

Are there Leopards in the small Savannah plains of Lake Mburo? The answer is yes but they are extremely rare to come across.

Lake Mburo is one of the best parks with amazing wild animals, including leopards. These animals are hunters that depend on meat, unlike herbivores that survive on plants.

Leopards are the second most popular predators after lions but are usually harder to spot. This is because they are very shy and prefer to live alone.

Lake Mburo may not be famous for hosting the Big Five like other parks, but many tourists love visiting it because it is only four hours from the city. This makes it easy for visitors to escape the busy city life.

There are stories of lions being seen in Lake Mburo, believed to have come from Tanzania, but this is not confirmed. It is even difficult to spot some members of the Big Five here.

However, the number of leopards in Uganda has grown, and they are now a common highlight, especially during night game drives. For the night drive, it is recommended to carry a flashlight, safari shoes, water, insect repellent, and other essentials.

Surprisingly, in Lake Mburo, leopards can be seen walking on the ground or resting on termite mounds. This is because there are fewer threats compared to other parks, where leopards often hide in trees to stay safe from lions, hyenas, and other stronger predators.

The best time to visit is during the dry season from June to August and also in September. During this time, leopards are often seen hunting thirsty herbivores, making it an exciting experience for tourists.

You can also visit during the wet seasons from March to May and from September to November. During the rainy season, the park becomes very green, but visitors should be ready for slippery paths.

While searching for leopards in Lake Mburo National Park, you can stay at Mihingo Safari Lodge, Rwakobo Rock Lodge, Eagles’ Nest Lodge, Kimbla Mantana Tented Camp, Lake Mburo Safari Lodge, Leopard Rest Camp, and many others.
