Lake Mburo in October is a wet month, with green vegetation and warm daytime temperatures between 22°C and 28°C. The mornings and evenings are cool, so it is good to pack a light jacket or a poncho. The park is less crowded during this time, which is nice for visitors who enjoy quiet and peaceful nature experiences.
You can reach the park by road, which is the most common way because the park is close to Kampala. It is best to use a 4×4 safari vehicle to handle the slippery and muddy roads. You can also travel by air from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Mbarara Airstrip.
Because of the wet and muddy trails, a boat cruise on Lake Mburo is one of the best ways to explore the park. This activity gives you a chance to see Nile crocodiles lying in the sun, hippos, and many water birds like herons and kingfishers. The boat ride is calm and offers good views for taking photos.
Animals such as impalas, zebras, buffaloes, and elands can often be seen in the early morning. However, they can be harder to find later in the day because of the thick vegetation and many water sources. If you are lucky, you might also see leopards or hyenas.
Bird watching is good in October, especially with migratory birds arriving. Rubanga Forest, swamps, lakeshores, and open plains are good places to spot birds. You may see the rare shoebill, papyrus gonolek, African finfoot, red-faced barbet, herons, and African fish eagles. Bring binoculars for viewing distant or small birds, and a bird guidebook to help with identification.
If the trails are dry, especially in the morning, you can go for a guided nature walk. This is a good way to explore the park on foot, with quiet paths and green views. Rwonyo Rest Camp is a good area for walking, where you may see warthogs, buffaloes, bee-eaters, and hornbills. The Kazuma trail offers nice views of the park.
Wear comfortable hiking shoes, light clothes that dry quickly, rain jackets, and insect repellent. Mosquitoes are common in October because of the many places where they can breed, so the risk of malaria is higher.
Lake Mburo in October is good for visitors who enjoy quiet activities and do not mind a few rain showers.
