Lake Mburo in August – Lake Mburo is the smallest Savannah park in Uganda. In August, the park offers many activities and wildlife sightings. This month is part of the dry season and receives very little rain. The weather is good for most activities, with daytime temperatures between 26°C and 29°C, and cooler temperatures around 17°C at night and in the early morning.
Although migratory birds are not present in August, you can still focus on the local bird species. Look for the papyrus gonolek, rare shoebill, herons, African finfoot, and African fish eagles in the swampy areas and along Lake Mburo.
A boat safari is a good way to enjoy bird watching. Bring binoculars for better viewing. You may also see hippos and Nile crocodiles sunbathing along the lake. The lakeside is a good place for photography.
Most of the seasonal lakes in the park dry up in August, which makes it easier to see animals near the remaining water sources. Zebras, buffaloes, impalas, elands, and leopards are often seen during morning and evening game drives when it is cool.
At night, you can go on a game drive to look for bush babies, spotted hyenas, and genets. Try to stay focused during these drives to observe the animals’ natural behavior.
Cycling safaris are another activity available in August. You can ride through the park and pass by animals like zebras and giraffes as they graze along the salt lick trail. The ride goes through acacia woodlands, wetlands, and rocky areas, offering close views of wildlife.
You can also cycle to nearby communities to meet the Bahima people of the Ankole region. Learn about their culture, traditions, and way of life. For more information about local culture, you can visit Igongo Cultural Centre, located 4 kilometers from Sanga Gate. It has a museum, local items, and historical displays from the western region of Uganda.
For your August safari, pack sunscreen, a light jacket for the cool mornings and evenings, light clothes, snacks, a reusable water bottle, insect repellent, and a small first aid kit. Since August is a busy travel season, book your lodge 2 to 3 months in advance.
August is a good month to visit Lake Mburo National Park. The park is easy to reach from Kampala and offers many activities with good weather and wildlife sightings.
