Lake Mburo National Park has several gates, each offering different views of the landscape and wildlife, which can shape your Uganda safari experience.

From Kampala, the park is roughly 228 kilometres away and can be reached by road. It takes about 4 hours to drive to the park.

Visitors can also use air transport from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Mbarara Airstrip, then transfer to the park by road.

Below is the list of gates to Lake Mburo National Park:

  • Sanga Gate: Sanga Gate is the main and most used entrance to Lake Mburo National Park. It is located in the north near Sanga trading centre. The gate is about 14 kilometers from the trading centre and is convenient for visitors coming from Kampala and Mbarara. Sanga Gate is close to the park’s visitor centre, where tourists get information about accommodation, activities, and park services.
  • Nshara Gate: Nshara Gate is located in the west of the park, near Rwonyo Campsite and Rwakobo Rock Lodge. It is about 8 kilometres from the main road. This gate is ideal for visitors staying inside the park and offers easy access to activities like game drives and hiking. It is commonly used by those coming from the Lyantonde-Mbarara highway.
  • Rwonyo Gate: Rwonyo Gate is located near the park headquarters close to Lake Mburo. It is the main entrance for visitors who want to explore the park’s wildlife. Most park activities start here, including bird watching, boat cruises, cultural tours, and walking safaris. The gate also gives access to Rwonyo Campsite, which is an accommodation facility within the park.
  • Zebra Track Gate: This gate is located in the northeastern part of Lake Mburo National Park. It is not commonly used by visitors and offers access to trails leading to zebra tracks and other animals. Zebra Track Gate is best for visitors who prefer fewer crowds and want to enjoy unique wildlife sightings.
  • Sanga Reception: Sanga Reception is a small entry point mainly used for registration and as a meeting point for rangers. It is located near Sanga Gate. Visitors use this reception to get permits, guides, and a briefing before entering the park.
