The Kyanyanshara Gate in Lake Mburo National Park

The Kyanyanshara Gate in Lake Mburo National Park

Game viewing in Lake Mburo is an exciting activity you can enjoy by vehicle, boat, mountain bike, horseback, or on foot through nature walks. Kyanyanshara Gate is one of the main entry points to access the deeper parts of Lake Mburo National Park.

Once inside, you can join game drives that explore the eastern areas of the park. You can also try the salt lick walk near Rwonyo, where you visit a natural salt lake and watch wildlife from a wooden observation platform.

The boat trip on Lake Mburo is also very interesting. You start from the jetty at the lakeside camping site and spend about two hours on the water. Along the way, watch for hippos and crocodiles. You may also see pelicans, herons, the rare finfoot, shoebill, and the fish eagle.

The climate in Lake Mburo is unique. The park lies in a rain shadow between Lake Victoria and the Rwenzori Mountains. It receives about 800 mm of rain, mostly from February to June. Short rains usually happen from September to December.

Because of this, it is best to check the weather before your visit. The dry season is often recommended since animals gather at waterholes, making it easier to spot them. Although park fees may be higher during this time, the clear weather improves your chance to see more wildlife.

After a day in the park, there are many places to rest. Accommodations range from budget to luxury. For a luxury stay, you can relax at campsites with bandas and tents like Rwonyo Rest Camp, Lakeside Campsite, and Lake Mburo Campsite.

Midrange options include Arcadia Cottages, located about one kilometer south of Rwonyo. For luxury lodges, Mihingo Lodge is popular and is near Kyanyanshara Gate, built on a large rock just outside the park.

The park also has a Conservation Education Centre west of Sanga Gate. It offers a hall for school groups, seminars, and workshops, as well as accommodation for visitors.

Kyanyanshara Gate offers a peaceful and beautiful entrance to Lake Mburo National Park. We recommend you use this gate on your safari visit.
