Lake Mburo Travel Advice, Recommendations & Tips

Lake Mburo Travel Advice and Tips – Lake Mburo is the smallest national park in Uganda. It has over 68 mammal species and 350 bird species. The park is located in Kiruhura District, near Mbarara town in western Uganda.

It is also the closest national park to Kampala. The best time to visit is during the dry season from June to August and December to February. During this time, animals gather around water sources, making it easier to see them.

Bird-watching is best during the wet season from March to May and September to November. The vegetation is green and good for photography, but the roads can become slippery.

From Kampala, it is about 240 kilometers to Lake Mburo by road through Masaka. The journey takes about 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic and stopovers.

You can hire a private car, take a guided tour, or use public transport such as a bus or taxi. Most visitors use this route to reach Sanga Gate. Sanga Gate is about 13 kilometers from Sanga Trading Centre on a dusty road.

Air transport is another option for travelers who prefer a faster trip. You can book a chartered flight from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Mbarara Airstrip.

The flight takes about one hour, followed by another hour by road to the park. It is best to arrange your airport transfer early through your lodge or the Uganda Wildlife Authority because vehicles in the area are limited.

There are many activities to enjoy in Lake Mburo. You can go on day or night game drives to see zebras, impalas, leopards, hyenas, and other animals.

Other activities include guided nature walks, horseback riding, boat cruises on Lake Mburo to see hippos, crocodiles, and water birds, and cultural visits to meet the Ankole people.

Bird-watching is popular, with over 350 bird species including the African finfoot and African kingfisher. Pack binoculars, a camera, light clothes for the day, warm clothes for the night, comfortable boots, a first aid kit, and sun protection.

Lake Mburo has a range of accommodation options from luxury to budget. Mihingo Lodge is a luxury choice, Rwakobo Rock is mid-range, and Eagle’s Nest Camp and Leopard Rest Camp are budget options. There is something for every traveler.

Lake Mburo is a great place for a short safari. It can also be added to a longer trip to Bwindi Impenetrable or Queen Elizabeth National Park.
