Lake Nakivali - Bird-watching, Fishing & Nature Spot Near Lake Mburo

In the heart of Isingiro district in western Uganda lies Lake Nakivali, a freshwater lake that is home to nine fish species. Five of these are non-haplochromines, while the rest are haplochromines.

The lake sits at 1,249 meters above sea level and is surrounded by a wetland system. The Lake Mburo-Nakivali wetland system covers about 268 square kilometers.

This natural area lies between two important biological zones, which helps support the variety of life around it.

Lake Nakivali is safer during the dry season when water levels are low, making activities on and around the lake more stable. However, in the wet season, rising water levels can cause dangers like drowning.

The dry months are from June to September and from December to February, while the wet season peaks in March, April, and May.

Despite its natural beauty, Lake Nakivali faces threats from harmful activities by locals. Farming near the shores has caused silting and lowered water levels. Illegal fishing is common and has reduced the number of fish, even though strict penalties exist.

Other activities like deforestation, farming, and livestock rearing have led to water pollution. This pollution harms aquatic life and poses health risks to people who rely on the lake.

You may see children fetching water from the lake, which can be dangerous without adult supervision, as accidents sometimes happen.

The area is also home to many bird species that make the visit colorful and exciting. These include the large shoebill storks, papyrus yellow warblers, and 22 species of Afro-tropical and Palearctic migrant birds that visit the lake during harsh weather.

It is best to keep quiet so you do not scare the birds. When taking photos, turn off flash to avoid disturbing them and to capture better pictures.

Feel the true spirit of Africa’s adventure at Lake Nakivali during your Lake Mburo safari.
