Lake Mburo Safari in January - Best Dry Season Wildlife Experience

Lake Mburo in January – January is part of the dry season in Lake Mburo and a good time to visit. Wildlife is easier to see, and there is little rain, with about 44 mm recorded. Average daytime temperatures are around 28°C (82°F), while nighttime temperatures drop to about 15°C (59°F). The mornings and evenings are cool and pleasant.

Because the vegetation is thin, it is easier to see animals like zebras, giraffes, topis, and buffaloes as they graze. These animals often gather near water sources. The roads leading to the park are dry, making travel easier and safer.

Most outdoor activities can be done during January. Game drives are best early in the morning or at night, when animals like leopards are active. Guided nature walks are also enjoyable in this season since the trails are dry and easy to walk. Walking through the park gives you close views of wildlife, especially in Rubanga Forest, where you can spot birds such as Nubian woodpeckers, red-shouldered cuckoo-shrikes, black boubous, and red-headed lovebirds. January is a good month for bird watching because both resident and migratory birds are present.

Since January is a busy travel season, it is important to book your lodge early. Accommodation options include luxury and budget lodges inside and outside the park. The risk of malaria is low because the seasonal wetlands are mostly dry, but mosquitoes may still be found near the lakes. Carry insect repellent and apply it before any outdoor activities. Also pack comfortable boots and socks, a camera with extra batteries, binoculars, small cash bills, light clothes for daytime, and warm long-sleeved clothes for the cooler nights. Because it can get hot during the day, bring sunscreen, a hat or cap, and sunglasses.

Although the roads are in good condition, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended, especially for self-drive game viewing inside the park. Mihingo Lodge also offers horseback riding, which gives visitors a quiet way to see animals up close without using a vehicle.

To relax after a day of activities, you can enjoy a sundowner at your lodge, especially those located on high ground or near Kigarama Hill.

January is a great month to visit Lake Mburo National Park for good weather and easy wildlife sightings.
