Lake Mburo in April – April is the peak of the rainy season in Lake Mburo. Heavy rains fall, especially around the middle of the month. Daytime temperatures range from 23°C to 27°C, and night temperatures drop to between 16°C and 19°C.
The vegetation becomes thick and green, and water sources are full, which causes animals to spread out. Roads can be muddy and slippery, so a 4×4 vehicle is recommended. Humidity is high, around 90%.
Because of the thick vegetation, it becomes harder to see wildlife. Still, some animals like zebras and buffaloes may be seen in the open areas as they graze in groups. Morning game drives are more reliable, as a few animals are still active before they move into the bushes for shelter. Many animals also give birth during this time, so you might spot young ones. Fewer tourists visit in April because of the heavy rains.
April is a good month for bird watchers. Migratory birds arrive in the park, adding to the more than 350 species already recorded. Look out for birds such as the rare shoebill, red-faced barbet, African finfoot, and papyrus gonolek in the swampy areas and Rubanga Forest.
Many birds breed during this season, and bird watching can be done all day. Bring waterproof binoculars to help you see small birds clearly.
Since mosquitoes are common during this wet season, it is important to carry insect repellent. The risk of malaria is high in April. Sleep under a treated mosquito net and speak to your doctor about taking antimalarial medicine before your trip.
If the rain becomes too heavy for outdoor activities, you can visit the local Ankole communities like the Bahima. You can learn how they look after their long-horned cattle, cook local food, and pass on their traditions to children.
Guided nature walks are possible, especially early in the month or in the morning before the rain starts. Wear rubber boots for the muddy trails and use a walking stick for balance.
Watch out for small animals and birds along the way. Your packing list should include a rain jacket, strong shoes, light clothes that dry quickly, a poncho, and a first aid kit.
Expect heavy rain and fewer animal sightings if you visit Lake Mburo in April. However, the month is good for bird watching and cultural visits.
