Kizimbi Swamp lies at an elevation of 1261 meters above sea level between the villages of Kalanja and Nombi. It feeds its water into Lake Mburo, which is one of the 14 lakes in the 50-kilometer wetland system linked by swamps.
The swamp’s main water sources are dams found in nearby ranches, which help provide water for the domestic animals kept there. People from the nearby communities of Kyakategyere and Byembogo also bring their animals here to drink, helping the animals grow healthy.
This swamp is part of the marshlands in western Uganda, found in the Ankole-Masaka region. It is home to several fish species such as mudfish, catfish, and lungfish.
Kizimbi Swamp is easy to reach, located just one kilometer from the Lake Mburo park boundary. This makes it a perfect stop for travelers who enjoy bird-watching.
You will find many birds feeding and singing as they move over the swamp waters.
Nature walks are possible in the area. While some visitors find walking tiring, rest stops with snacks and water are arranged to keep you refreshed.
These walks usually last a few hours and offer a good chance to explore the swamp’s beauty. Game drives are also available in safari vehicles.
Most of these vehicles have roofs to protect you from the sun or rain, making your trip more comfortable. You can pay for game drives at the park gates or through the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Though Lake Mburo is a small savannah plain, many wild animals live here. You may see zebras, impalas, topis, reedbucks, cape buffaloes, olive baboons, Defassa waterbuck, hyenas, and Rothschild’s giraffes.
Birds like the shoebill stork, African fish eagle, papyrus yellow warbler, African finfoot, kingfishers, and pelicans are also found here.
With wetlands and lakes covering 20% of the park, it supports many wild animals such as buffaloes, warthogs, and hippos.
The park also has rocky ridges, gorges, papyrus swamps, and narrow areas of woodland along the lakeshores where you may spot antelopes and hyenas.
