Giraffes in Lake Mburo – Lake Mburo National Park had been missing some wild animals for many years, including giraffes. Due to high demand from tourists visiting the park during their Uganda safaris, the government and the Uganda Wildlife Authority decided to introduce giraffes.
Since 2018, the number of giraffes has grown because the park has open land with fast-growing acacia trees, which are their main food. In the giraffe family, males are bigger than females and have darker skin.
The giraffes were brought from Murchison Falls National Park, which is located in northern Uganda. This was done to help protect endangered species. The plan was to move fifteen giraffes to Lake Mburo, where they could reproduce and grow in number.
This idea worked well, and now Lake Mburo National Park has become a special place for both local and international tourists. Uganda cares deeply about protecting wild animals, which is why you can still see the rare Rothschild’s giraffes in Lake Mburo.
These giraffes are very few in the world. They were named after Walter Rothschild, the founder of the Tring Museum. They are also sometimes called Baringo giraffes.
These special giraffes have features that attract animal lovers from around the world. One unique thing is that they have five ossicones (horn-like structures). Two are larger, the third one is at the center of the forehead, and the other two are behind the ears.
Another special feature is their height. They can grow up to six meters tall, which is about 20 feet. This made the park officials realize that the only thing missing in Lake Mburo was the long-necked giraffe, which adds beauty to the park.
Their long neck helps them see danger from far and escape it, which has helped their numbers grow. However, the park faces a challenge with their breeding habits.
Giraffes in Lake Mburo do not have a set mating season and can mate at any time of the year. This sometimes affects the park’s monitoring programs.
Their pregnancy lasts about fourteen to sixteen months, and they usually give birth to one calf, which makes it easier to watch and care for the newborn.
Enjoy the amazing giraffe experience at Lake Mburo National Park.
