Visit the unique Warukiri area, which covers 3.7 kilometers of land. It is filled with many bird species, making it a good place for bird lovers. During your game drive, you will see different wild animals moving around as they search for food and water. This movement becomes more common during the dry season when most water sources dry up, and animals gather around the few that are left, which often also have grass nearby.
The area is named after Wakukira Hill, which rises to 1,274 meters above sea level. From the hill, you can see much of the park, including its landscapes and the vegetation that surrounds it. The area is known for its birdlife, and you can join a birding trip, usually led by a knowledgeable guide. The guide will take you to swampy valleys where you might see birds like the bare-faced go-away bird, Abyssinian ground hornbill, grey crowned crane, Ross’s turaco, African grey hornbill, African wattled lapwing, martial eagle, double-toothed barbet, red-faced barbet, and many others.
Besides birding, you can enjoy a horse riding activity in the Warukiri area. This is a fun way to explore, and sometimes the zebras become curious about the horses, wondering if they are part of their group. You can also walk to nearby local villages where people may show you handmade crafts and perform traditional music, dance, and drama. This gives you a good cultural experience before joining the cycling adventure.
Cycling in this area is best during the dry season when the paths are dry and easy to use. Make sure to wear protective gear to avoid hurting your skin in case you fall. It is also good to wear sunglasses to keep dust out of your eyes, and you can use a face mask to stop dust from entering your nose.
Another activity you should not miss is a boat ride on Lake Mburo. It helps you relax from the heat of the day as you enjoy the calm water. This experience can give you long-lasting memories.
Warukiri is inside Lake Mburo National Park, so it is easy to reach. If you are traveling by road, the short distance from Kampala makes it a good choice. It is only 230 kilometers, which takes about four hours to drive.
