Location of Lake Mburo & How to Get There – Lake Mburo National Park is located in the western part of Uganda in Kiruhura District, along the Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara highway.
It is the smallest and nearest national park to Kampala and Entebbe, about 240 kilometers from Kampala and 30 kilometers from Mbarara town.
Many travelers stop here for 1 or 2 days before continuing to Bwindi Impenetrable or Queen Elizabeth National Park. The park is surrounded by Kiruhura, Lyantonde, Mbarara, and the northern part of Isingiro District.
Lake Mburo can be visited any time of the year, but the best time is during the dry season from June to August and December to February. This is when wildlife is easier to see.
The months from March to May and September to November are wetter, with thick green vegetation. These months are good for birdwatching, but the murram roads can become muddy and slippery.
You can reach the park by road from Kampala through Masaka to Mbarara. The drive takes about 4 hours. This is the most common way to get to the park since it is closer than other national parks.
You can use a private car or hire a safari vehicle. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended. You get off the main road at Sanga Trading Centre.
If you are using public transport, take a bus or taxi from Kampala to Lyantonde or Sanga town, then use a motorcycle or local taxi to reach the park gate. Make sure to leave early because the park closes by 7:00 pm.
Alternatively, you can fly to the park using chartered or scheduled flights from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Mbarara Airstrip.
These flights are run by companies like Fly Uganda or Aerolink Uganda. The flight takes about 1 hour, and then you will need another 1 hour by road to reach the park or lodge.
Because taxis are few in this area, it is best to arrange transport in advance. Some lodges like Mihingo Lodge can help with airport transfers.
Lake Mburo National Park is located near Mbarara in western Uganda and can be reached by road or air, with road transport being the most common option.
