Lake Mburo National Park is located in Kiruhura district in western Uganda. It is home to many wildlife species, including zebras, leopards, bushbucks, buffaloes, reedbucks, warthogs, elands, and over 350 bird species. Though the park is small, it offers great game drive experiences through its open savannah grasslands.
Day and night game drives in Lake Mburo are best during the dry season, from June to August and December to February. During this time, the grass is shorter because of less rainfall, which makes it easier to see animals.
Day game drives start as early as 6 am and go until 10 am when animals are more active. You can expect to see giraffes, zebras, impalas, elands, and topis grazing in the open plains from a safari vehicle.
Bird lovers may also spot African finfoot, lilac-breasted roller, shoebill stork, and the African fish eagle.
Day game drives cost 30 USD per person for foreign non-residents, 25 USD per person for foreign residents, and 30,000 UGX per person for East African citizens. You can choose a guided game drive or a self-drive by hiring a safari vehicle. It is recommended to carry a camera, binoculars, snacks, and drinking water.
Night game drives offer a special chance to see nocturnal animals that are hard to spot during the day. The drive starts at 7 pm and ends around 10 pm when many animals begin hunting.
Look out for leopards, hyenas, genets, nightjars, and owls. An armed ranger must accompany you during the night game drive for safety.
Use red-filtered lights at night to avoid disturbing the animals. Stay quiet to enjoy the sounds of the wild and listen to animal movements. Night game drives are done in 4×4 safari vehicles under the open night sky. It is good to carry cameras that work in low light, binoculars, and warm clothes in dull colours.
A night game drive costs 40 USD per person for foreign non-residents, 35 USD per person for foreign residents, and 50,000 UGX per person for East African citizens.
Day game drives in Lake Mburo National Park offer good views of antelopes, zebras, and birdlife, while the highlights of night game drives are nocturnal animals and predators like owls, leopards, and hyenas.
